Manuel Martin - El trompantli

AUTHOR: Manuel Morín (from Cabañas Cultural Institute, Guadalajara, website)
A part of the celebrations of the Day of the Dead 2016, Cabañas Cultural Institute invites to the exhibition Tzompantli Makuili where the sculptor Manuel Morin is inspired by the multiple expression of death through the calavera, or as he explains: “The calavera is different from the skull in its cultural appropriation. We take the skull with us; we expose our calavera beyond life. While the calaca is the translation of calavera to sign”.
In this project, Manuel Marín retakes the tradition of ancient Mexicans giving to them a renewed boost in their free reproductions which are based on the human configuration and take those who observe them to reflect on life and death.
He presents two pieces, one, a wall with 1000 paper calavera sculptures and another one, an Altar formed by 70 wooden strips, each one with four MDF calaveras, lacquered and drawn with graphite.
